Create cool infographics!

The image above was created on www.easel.ly and is super awesome! It takes a while to get used to the functions etc. but its worth it! Maybe older students can make use if it... but for primary schools it is a no-no! But maybe it can work? You'll never know until you try! Check / Try it out!

Could be really useful for Geography!

Learning About Leaders (Grade 4) - Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela (Grade 4 Social Sciences)

According to the CAPS document 5 hours should be spent on the life story of Nelson Mandela. The following resource is absolutely amazing!!

There's information about his life and also some images and a video. But the best of it all is the interactive game! Its in a talk show format and Madiba's accent is quite funny! (They tried... lol!) It asks questions (easy questions) about Madiba. The learners can complete it at home or even at school in the computer lab. Maybe you can use it as a class exercise!

Here's the link: BBC Primary History - Nelson Mandela

Enjoy!! :-)

Kaartwerk / Map Work

This PowerPoint presentation is adapted from the WCED Curriculum Development resource cd for Social Sciences teachers.

Ek het dit gebruik vir Graad 8's maar ek is seker dit kan aangepas word vir hoer grade so wel as laer grade!

It explains the legend of a map as well as what a map is and also the different colours on a map (man made structures, topography, etc..)

The South African War

Unfortunately the South African War (Anglo-Boer War) does not feature in the Intermediate & Senior Phase CAPS documents. It  is however now part of the Grade 10 History curriculum.

These presentations are aimed at a younger group. I am not sure how in depth it is taught in Grade 10, but I hope this can help!

Presentation 1: An introduction to the SA War
Presentation 2: Phases of the South African War
Presentation 3: Phases of the South African War (continued)
Presentation 4: The Scorched Earth Policy (Concentration Camps etc.)
Presentation 5: Black Involvement in the South African War and Conclusion.

Some notes on the South African War:

Notes 1: SA War Revision (Word Document)
Notes 2: Phases of the South African War (Revision) (Word Document)

The information is from a textbook "Social Sciences Today Grade 8" and various sources from the internet (I did not reference, as I only used it in class). I also do not own any of the images etc..

Fakebook! A fantastic and fun way of doing projects!

Take a look at the following links I found on using Facebook as a tool in the classroom.

Some ideas for using Fakebook in the South African Classroom:

Social Sciences:
  • Historic profiles of different important figures in South African History (e.g. a profile of Nelson Mandela that highlights important dates in his lifetime).
  • Geography: Create a 'page' that contains information about a certain province, city, country etc..
  • Also geography: Create an 'about me' page that contains information about a certain industry such as fishing or agriculture. Also use the photo page to insert photos that illustrates the topic. The captions of the photos could be part of the project...
Languages:

Hierdie tema is vir Sosiale Wetenskappe se Geskiedenis afdeling.

British Defeat at Isandlwana

South African War - Concentration Camps

This video is suitable for Grade 8 History. It depicts the cruelty and terrible conditions of the Concentration Camps during the South African War from 1899 - 1902.
